California Jacket — Short and Wide, 1940s Horsehide

A turn-down collar, centre zip, and three-pocket layout: the basic California form, handed down unchanged for more than a hundred years because it is simple and goes with everything.
The head of REAL SIMONS studied and referred to many classic examples, going over every detail and putting them back together. The angles of the three pockets were brought into symmetry and the curve at the side waist finely adjusted. A 1940s teardrop zipper pull was added as an accent, and the pattern was rebuilt from the ground up on years of customer feedback into a short, wide silhouette that suits how people are built today.
The material is a substantial, dense horse leather. A front zip, collar snaps, and a waist adjuster belt make it a rough piece. The amber brown is a translucent dyed amber that gains lustre and depth of shade with scuffing and wear, ageing richly.

• Black (Tea-Core): outer leather: horsehide (oil-wax finish); lining: yes. *Deep black on the surface with brown at the core — a tea-core finish. An aniline-type leather, so the brown comes through as character with scuffing and wear.

• Amber: outer leather: horsehide (oil-wax finish); lining: yes. *Dyed translucently into an amber colour. An aniline-type leather, so depth of shade comes through as character with scuffing and grain.

• Take care to keep the leather away from rain and water. If it does get wet, blot the moisture off promptly with a dry cloth and let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated, shaded place.
• Store on a hanger that matches the shoulder width so the garment keeps its shape.
• Wipe dirt away gently with a dry, soft cloth, and condition with a leather cream as needed.
• Store away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.
