551 Leather Jacket, British Classic, Black Calfskin

A leather jacket built on a British classic design. A clean collar, front zip, and waist belt give it refined, trim detail.
This model, the 551, is a masterpiece of the British classic motorcycle leather, custom-developed by our founder to American export standards. Material, tanning, and design all embody the REAL SIMONS philosophy.
Material and process
The raw material is French Brooke calfskin. Using chemical materials from the American dye maker Allied Chemical & Dye Corporation, it is finished through a combination tanning process to American export standards.
The first stage is full vegetable tanning (environmentally considerate and biodegradable); the second adds a wax water-dye plus a heavy oil-wax treatment. Precisely because there is no coating layer, the natural quality of the material comes through.
At 1.2 mm and densely formed, the leather is the result of combining full vegetable tanning with a thorough protein-filling stage. Its almost skeletal structure resists losing shape, and with use it develops a two-tone effect with real depth.
Being young cattle, the pores are very fine, giving a hand close to horse leather, while the deep black, with high-quality dye fully absorbed, has a refinement with no grey or red cast to it. Carrying the quality of a heavy oil wax while keeping the pores clearly open is very rare indeed.
The natural grain of the material produces a rich texture, much like the heavy shrunken markings of horse leather.
Using a fine, supple calfskin with an oil-wax finish means lustre and shadow deepen the more it is worn. Over time the oil works further in and the colour shifts, and that process is exactly this leather's greatest appeal.

• Take care to keep the leather away from rain and water. If it does get wet, blot the moisture off promptly with a dry cloth and let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated, shaded place.
• Store on a hanger that matches the shoulder width so the garment keeps its shape.
• Wipe dirt away gently with a dry, soft cloth, and condition with a leather cream as needed.
• Store away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.
