Archetype 1930s D-Pocket Riders Jacket, Horsehide

Leather Togs of Everett, Massachusetts, was among the pioneers of motorcycle leather clothing, advertising it by the early 1920s. Its peak ran from the mid-1930s through the 1940s, and its D-pocket jacket became the pattern many later makers built on. REAL SIMONS returned to that 1930s model and rebuilt it in modern materials. The vintage silhouette is kept as it was; what changed is that you can actually ride in it.

The collar holds the 1920s–30s shape exactly: the angle between upper and under collar, and the slight curve along the edge, are reproduced without flattening or simplifying. The D-pockets are given a full, rounded shape with their own zip pulls. The cuffs are drawn in narrow, as the original design intended, so the wind doesn't get up your sleeves. The waist belt, the epaulettes for holding gloves, and the four round studs on the sleeve that were the Leather Togs signature are all there, one sleeve at a time.

Inside, the body is lined in a wool blend and the sleeves in an American check. The shoulders and chest are cut wide, and the body draws in cleanly towards the hem, it doesn't flap when you ride, and it looks right the moment you get off.

IDEAL zips and an old-style steel buckle throughout. The jacket is offered in two hides. Black is full-grain horsehide. Amber Brown is an amber-dyed, high-density vegetable-tanned horsehide that REAL SIMONS makes only for markets outside China. It is tanned and dyed as a hide of its own, so it carries deeper grain movement and a russet cast that lightens along the creases as the jacket breaks in. The brown is priced slightly higher for that reason.

• Take care to keep the leather away from rain and water. If it does get wet, blot the moisture off promptly with a dry cloth and let it dry naturally in a well-ventilated, shaded place.

• Store on a hanger that matches the shoulder width so the garment keeps its shape.

• Wipe dirt away gently with a dry, soft cloth, and condition with a leather cream as needed.

• Store away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity.
